The creation

Murat was the one who offered to pay salaries to esportsmen from the team to prevent them from searching for earnings. The Kyiv citizen Sergey “starix» Ischuk was the first person who believed Arbalet. Having made a deal about the partnership, Sergey began assembling the team.

Negotiations with players took two months. The creation of the new team was proudly announced on December 18, 2009. It received the bright name NaVi.

The team’s initial name was marked in this way. The creators said that their decision about the name was influenced by James Cameron’s “Avatar”. That’s how the alien’s tribe was called.

The contest for the best key for the abbreviation NaVi was announced later. The option with the reference to the Latin spelling of the motto: “The Born to Win” (Natus Vincere).

The first NaVi roster

The following players responded to Sergey’s invitation:

• Ivan “Edward” Sukhariev;
• Arseniy “Esenin” Trynozhenko;
• Danylo «Zeus» Teslenko.

With “starix”, they have become the first legendary CS roster of NaVi.

The first tournaments

The first tournament Arbalet Cup CIS was hosted in 2010. The team spent it unsuccessfully. It even had to take a break and miss ASUS Winter 2020 to practice hard. The result was the victory in the Ukrainian qualifiers to ESWC. Then, the new team made it to the final of the competition in Stockholm, placed second and the guys earned the first grabs – 10 thousand dollars

Due to the fact that NaVi qualified to the main ESWC tournament for the first time, they spent two months preparing. They were working seriously on team play. The hard work on training sessions brought its result – the team achieved the first victory at the prestigious world cup. The serious opponent, SK Gaming was defeated on two maps (Train and Inferno) in the final.

NaVi prevailed at two more tournaments in 2010: GameGune, which took place in Bilbao, and the summer Arbalet Cup in Dallas. The team held the first place in the unofficial competition by the number of earned grabs per season in 2010. The team manager ZeroGravity was very pleased with the results provided by the team and big earnings.

The victories of the team did not stop. In October, they won the third tournament World Cyber Games and became the first team to hold three CS titles (IEM, ESWC, WCG) at the same time.

The lucky year was over for NaVi with the LAN competition in Sweden. The winter DreamHack was carried out there. The team achieved a confident victory, having lost only one map, Mirage, during all matches.

The team triumph was also added by the personal success of one of the creators of the team. Sergey “starix” Ischuk was recognized as the most valuable player of the tournament. This victory allowed the Ukrainians to reach the first place by the sum of won prize money per year – 220 thousand dollars.

The results in 2010:

• twenty medals (eight of them were the gold ones);
• the big fan army;
• the leadership by the number of prize money.

The fall from Olympus and the roster changes

The total domination of the first NaVi roster lasted two years. The guys believed in themselves so much that they moved to the new version of the game, CS:GO, without any doubts. And it was a very bad move. The team was unstable, the results became worse. There was a fail after a fail at tournaments.

The management endured “the golden roster” as long as possible. 15 months were the darkest ones since the creation of the team. Conflicts between the players were the outcome of failures. As a result, the players started leaving the team because they had no perspective of fixing the relationship.

Yegor “markeloff” Markelov was hunted by another club, Arseniy “ceh9” Trynozhenko became a caster. Denis «seized» Kostin (rifler and AWP) and Ladislav «GuardiaN» Kovac (sniping).

Unfortunately, there was no significant change in gaming quality. The CEO had to make a very difficult decision – the very first player, Sergey “starix” Ischuk was not good enough anymore. The team needed new, fresh blood.

Sergey held the position of a playing coach and the promising Egor “flamie” Vasiliev was invited to join the main roster. Flamie played his first match on March 17, 2015. Egor is still the main player of the team. In October 2020, his statistics include 724 matches (433 victories – 60 percent).

Transfers and roster rotations

Starting from 2015, NaVi’s luck returned. The roster started playing as a team and fired up at ESL Pro League triumphally. It seemed that the famous team returned and was ready to fight for big prizes at prestigious events.

Fans were happy, watching the team’s powerful and beautiful play. The guys played a few maps and were following spectacular and aggressive tactics. All of this was followed by the players’ interesting individual decisions.

The roster was stable and was holding the second place in the world rate by HLTV.org during some time.

2016 was a controversial year in the history of the team. The beginning was confident – DreamHack Leipzig was conquered in spring. There was a decline in the game after that and a decrease in results. The decision of the management was predictable. The young talent Oleksandr «s1mple» Kostyliev had to replace zeus who had lost his shape significantly.

The transfer definitely worked – NaVi won the title of ESL One: New York in the toughest fight in December. The creator of that success was Kostyliev, rewarded as the MVP of the competition.

All specialists predicted the team to have incredible growth. But it appeared that it was the only tournament they won. 2017 passed without serious success, which was a big blow to the ambitions of such a serious organization as NaVi.

The return

Teslenko was showing good results after his departure from NaVi. As a keeper of victorious traditions, he was convinced to return to the position of the team captain. Fans were happy about the return of the leader in the home club.

Zeus alone was not able to change the unsuccessful trend. Other replacements were necessary. Denis «seized» Kostin decided to leave the club. Denis «electronic» Sharipov was invited to hold his place.

Another changes brought a result. NaVi made it to the finals of large tournaments twice where they were stopped from achieving victory by Astralis who were undefeated at that moment.

“The veteran” Ioann “Edward” Sukhariev left the team in 2019. Kirill «Boombl4» Mikhailov arrived at his place. Teslenko was persuading BoombI4 for a long period because he saw him as a replacement.

And it happened so. Now, BoombI4 is a captain, showing his skill of controlling the team nicely and fixing conflict situations.

The scandal

A big scandal happened in September 2020. The investigation made by the special commission showed that the coaches of NaVi: the legend “starix” and his mate Andi were using a camera bug in 2017. The investigation determined the usage of the camera by the coaches at least in two matches.

Former coaches did not deny the violation and pleaded guilty fully. The club made an official excuse to all interested persons and fans.

This scandal did not harm the club’s reputation and the team’s morale. “Natus Vincere can’t be broken so easily!” — said BoombI4 during the preparation for another online tournament.
